April 5th

Hello Parents and Guardians

We hope that you are all staying healthy during these unusual times. I wanted to provide you with some further information since my last email.

First off, I want to thank you for your patience as we waited for direction from the Province as to what our next steps were to be for our students’ learning. I want to thank all of you who have responded to teachers' messages with stories and pictures/videos of what our dragons are doing while physically distancing themselves from us. Keep sharing those bits of information as it adds a bit of sunlight to our days!

Yesterday, you should have received a message from Denise Andre, our school board’s Director of Education. I have included an important piece about assessment from her message below:

“As a Board we know we are in the midst of a pandemic and the learning conditions are not ideal for our students. In an effort to ensure that no student is negatively penalized as a result of the school closures, we are asking all staff to determine what the student mark would have been at the time of the school closures had the school year been cancelled.   The focus on assessment moving forward would be mainly on feedback, unless the teacher feels it is in the benefit of the student to have more formal assessments”. Here is the link to the full message which has been posted on our board website

We are entering Phase 2 of the Distance Learning introduced by the Minister of Education. Our teachers have been working collaboratively to put together engaging learning opportunities for their students. Each homeroom teacher will be emailing you tomorrow with information regarding the schedule/outline of what they and their teaching partners have prepared for your child for this week. Many of our teachers, especially in grades 4-6, use HAPARA workspaces to prepare their students' work. Your child can easily locate the workspaces on his/her student portal. They should already know how to find this, but if they are unsure, they can access it from our school website St George School, Please know that the lessons that will be shared with you and your child are to be used at your discretion at this time. We realize that many of you have very challenging home situations at the moment. We know that there are many of you that are front-line workers and we would like to thank you for all that you are doing for our health and safety.

We are awaiting the approval from Ottawa Public Health to be able to access the technology that we have in the school and make it accessible to our students who require this additional support.

Please complete this FORM if your child does not have access to support this new emergency digital learning format OR if there is an item required to support your child’s learning at the school. We will be in touch once we know more regarding access to the schools and the possible distribution of technology.

Last thing, we have a special message from the staff  - please click on this link to view Our Special Message

Take care and please feel free to email me directly should you have any further questions or concerns. Roisin.philippe@ocsb.ca
