A Message from the Principal

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Tim Slack and I am the principal of St. George. I am very excited for another year and looking forward to a new school year learning with you and your children. Over the next few weeks I hope see as many of you as possible as we get back into the school routine for another year. The staff at St. George and I look forward to working with you and your child/ren to continue all of the great things that go on in our community. Your participation and partnership in your child's education is always encouraged and welcomed.

Please be advised that student placement on Tuesday, September 6th is tentative with hopes that everything will be finalized the first three weeks of school. In order to meet Ministry guidelines regarding class size, it may become necessary to reorganize classes during this period. You will be notified of any changes affecting your child. Student placement is always looked at closely by the staff and the decisions that are made are in the best interests of all involved. Your patience and support is appreciated.

Program Night and Back to School BBQ

On Thursday, September 15th we are going to be having our Welcome Back BBQ and Program Night. This is an opportunity to see familiar faces, meet new friends and find out about your child’s learning and class for the 2016-17 school year. We are still working out the finishing details, but the BBQ will start at 5:00 PM.

Following the Teacher sessions there will be a School Council Meeting at 7PM in the staffroom. Past members are welcomed back and new parents are encouraged to get involved. If you think you have some ideas, talents and skills that would benefit our school community, then this is the place for you. We hope to see a good turnout.

Breakfast Program Volunteers Needed

St. George is very lucky to have a great Breakfast Program that runs everyday and makes sure that our students are fueled up with a nutritious breakfast and ready to start the day. It cannot work without the support of our community volunteers.

If you have some time to spare and are interested in helping out, please contact Liliana at:

Home School Communication

Communication is one of the most important aspects of having a successful school community that is informed and up to date with what is happening at their child's school.  This will be the only paper newsletter you will receive this year. There will be bi-weekly, sometimes weekly, updates that you will be sent via email. These updates will also be posted on the school website. If you have not already given the school your email address, or updated it recently, please do so.

Activity Fee

Our school will provide basic supplies that your child will need. A voluntary donation of $40.00 per student will help cover all other needs such as agendas and other special school related activities. Please go to to make your payment. Credit Cards are now being accepted!!! If you need help registering on this site please call the school.

Transportation Information

Contact Numbers:  All bussing inquires should be referred to the Ottawa Student Transportation Authority.

Telephone: 613-224-8800               Website:

Applications for Seat Availability: Requests for transportation under our seat availability provision can be made and approvals may be granted, where space and service exist, for students who would not normally be eligible for transportation services. Forms are available on the Board website and at the school. Families will be advised in writing if their child has been approved to start riding the bus  and copies of this correspondence will be forwarded to the school. If there is room on the bus the earliest transportation can begin is October 1st.

Changes to Pick Up or Drop Off: If there is a change in address resulting in a change in bussing arrangements, please notify the school immediately so that information can be entered in our computer system. Any changes to drop off and pick up locations must be approved by the  transportation department. This approval usually takes several days.

Student Safety

Your child’s safety is our very first priority. We appreciate your cooperation with the following safety procedures. With close to 400 students and over 33 staff members, we must be diligent in our efforts to ensure the safety of all.

SIGNING IN: The Board requires all visitors entering to sign in and state the purpose of their visit. All visitors must enter through the front door. Whether you are coming to meet with a staff member, to volunteer, or to pick up your child, please sign in at the office before proceeding to another part of the school. Even if you are only staying for a few minutes, it is imperative that you sign in. You will be given a visitor’s badge that will identify you as a visitor to the school.

YARD SUPERVISION: Yard supervision begins at 9:00 a.m. Please ensure that your child does not arrive at school before that time, as they will not be supervised. School staff are on duty from 9:00 - 9:15 a.m., during recesses and lunch time, and at dismissal time. Staff can be identified by their orange sashes.

LATES: It is very important that your child get to school on time. If late, your child is to come in through the front door and sign in. Students who are late and do not sign in are often initially reported absent to the office and parents will receive a call to enquire about the absence. This can cause undue panic and confusion. Your assistance in following this procedure is much appreciated.

ABSENCES: Attendance is taken twice a day, in the morning and after lunch. Students are assigned an attendance buddy in the classroom. Please call the school if your child is going to be absent from school. The answering machine at the school is always on.

LEAVING EARLY: If your child is to leave school early for any reason, please send a note to the teacher. Your child will be called from their classroom when you arrive.  When you are picking up your child early, you need to come into the office and sign out your child.
