May 19th Update

Hello parents and guardians

I hope you managed to enjoy some of that beautiful weather that we had on the weekend. It looks like we have officially turned the cool spring corner and that we are headed into nicer weather. We continue to pray for many who are suffering at the moment and we think about Capt Jennifer Casey’s family as they mourn her sudden death yesterday due to the Snowbirds crash. Our school staff think of all of you and hope that you are all keeping well.

I have a few things to share with you today. As you may have heard, Premier Ford announced that schools will remain closed to staff and students for the remainder of this school year. You should have received a communication from the school board with an update as to where we stand in regards to accessing the school to retrieve items. If you did not receive this message, please go to this link to see the full message. The board continues to wait for approval from Ottawa Public Health on their submitted protocol for retrieving personal items from the school. They expect students and/or parents will be able to access the school sometime in June to retrieve their personal items. I am working on a plan that will permit controlled access once we are informed that we are ready to implement this protocol. I will keep you posted once we have approval and a plan in place.

Our teachers continue to provide activities for our students and by the end of this week, all students at St George will have been invited to take part in a google meet with their classmates. Again, these are not mandatory and are completely at your discretion if your child wants to participate and if it works into your home schedule.

Our Speech Pathologists with the board will be offering a workshop to our parent community on “developing your child’s vocabulary”  this Thursday at noon. Here is the registration link, It is geared for parents and hosted by CSPA.

CSPA's Lunch & Learn series continues Thursdays in May at noon - click here for more info and to register

Our school board continues to provide many PD opportunities for our staff on various tools to help with distance learning. This has been quite the learning curve for so many. One new tool that I played around with this weekend is creating a Bitmoji office. It is another way to help engage the students. Mrs Shurb and myself have recorded a few read-aloud that we would like to share with your children. You may have seen some of these before. We will continue to add to this bookshelf as we read more books. You need to first click the present button in the top right hand corner and then click on any of the books. This should then provide the read-aloud of this book. We hope that your children enjoy hearing our familiar voices :-) Here is the link to the google slide of our bitmoji office

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to let me know.
